Previous HSC R&D Award Holder receives US-UK Fulbright Scholarship

Previous HSC R&D award holder, Dr Joe Duffy, School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University Belfast (QUB) has been awarded a US-UK Fulbright All Disciplines Scholar Award for 2018-19.

In 2017, Dr Duffy, together with colleagues in QUB, Ulster University, the HSC Trusts and the voluntary sector, completed an evaluation of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland through an Enabling Research Award. The study was commissioned by the Public Health Agency and the Patient Client Council and the report can be accessed here>.

Considered to be the most prestigious scholarships in the world, the Fulbright Award will involve Joe working with New York University’s Silver School of Social Work, Belmont University (Nashville) Social Work Department and the US Council for Social Work Education over a 12 month period beginning September 2018, to introduce service user and carer involvement into the Social Work curriculum in the United States. This is an aspect of social work teaching for which Joe is internationally recognised.

Speaking of the Fulbright Award, Joe said: ‘I am so thrilled to receive this Fulbright Award and that this will be a basis for helping social work education in the US to work with service user knowledge and experience to help students develop in key aspects of their social work competence. Equally, it will be important for us in Northern Ireland to learn from the established practices in the US of using simulation-based knowledge in social work education, an area where we are also currently innovating.’
