Ulster University held their Family-Centred Cancer Care conference on 30 Mar '17, with delegates in attendance from a range of sectors to include UU and QUB, HSC R&D, acute and community NHS staff, Cancer Charities from NI and Republic of Ireland, and parents. The event focused on the growing body of evidence surrounding the support needs of families impacted by parental cancer and how healthcare professionals who are delivering care can promote positive coping for these families.
Those who attended had the opportunity to learn about educational interventions delivered to frontline oncology professionals as part of a Knowledge Exchange Scheme funded by the HSC R&D Division, Public Health Agency. A new interactive e-learning module was launched to provide healthcare professionals with a 'Talking, Telling and Sharing' framework to help empower parents to communicate with their children about their cancer. This is a partnership project between Ulster University, HSC South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust and Cancer Focus NI being led by Prof Eilis McCaughan, Dr Cherith Semple and Rachel Smith.
