Development of a new partnership with the Centre for Research Equity

HSC R&D Division were pleased to join Professor Cathy Harrison, the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer (Department of Health) in welcoming Professor Mahendra Patel to Northern Ireland on 1st February 2024 to discuss the development of a new partnership with the Centre for Research Equity (CfRE). The CfRE's mission is to advance the understanding of and improve inclusive research practice and community engagement in health and care research and is based in the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. The proposed collaborative voluntary partnership with the CfRE and partners in NI is designed to enhance inclusive research practices and community engagement.

The event brought together key stakeholders from across the research, policy and voluntary sector to discuss how to further develop and support equitable research for Northern Ireland, and identify key priority areas for knowledge sharing and learning.

What is being planned?

  • Support and training for research and support staff to increase health equity.
  • Evidencing and sharing the benefits for community-based recruitment and trial design.
  • Building on the evidence base around the determinants of health inequalities, proposing methods and research design to improve outcomes for all.
  • Supporting inclusive community engagement, involvement and participation in research.

Further updates will be shared as the partnership progresses.
