29 Sep 2026 - Building Research Partnerships (NI) Training

Event Date:
2026-09-29

In-person workshop: Tuesday 29th September 2026 9.30am – 2.30pm (tea & coffee on arrival with a 10am start), NICVA 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast BT15 2GB

In-person workshop on Tuesday 29th September 2026 (9.30am – 2.30pm): This free interactive workshop will focus on the practical ways to involve patients, carers and members of the public as partners in Health and Social Care research. Through a combination of group discussions and interactive activities, workshop attendees will explore the principles of meaningful Personal and Public Involvement (PPI), building effective research partnerships, communicating and working together throughout the research cycle, and addressing some of the practical and inclusive considerations involved in planning and delivering PPI. The importance of effective PPI in grant applications will also be discussed. The workshop will also provide opportunities to hear from both researchers and public contributors, share experiences and ask questions in a supportive learning environment. An agenda for the day can be found here.

The formal training sessions will conclude at approximately 1.20pm. However, we strongly encourage workshop attendees to stay until 2.30pm for a networking lunch and informal discussion, providing an opportunity to meet other researchers and public contributors, continue conversations from the morning and build new research partnerships.

To register: Registration: Building Research Partnerships (NI) Training 29th September 2026 – Fill in form (places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. If fully booked, a waiting list will be created)

Our next ‘live follow-up PPI session’ will be held on Wednesday 18th November 2026 (10.30am-12.15pm): This shorter session will be delivered virtually and enables researchers and patients, carers and members of the public to come together and ask questions, get practical support on PPI, and network. To register email cara.mcclure@hscni.net or see the flyer.

Before attending either the workshop or virtual session, please complete Section 1 of the ‘Building Research Partnerships’ NI training; this consists of a series of the pre-recorded presentations that give an ‘Introduction to Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) in research’ and can be accessed at any time.

Additional PPI resources are also now available on our website
We have recently developed a PPI Resource Library for researchers and a PPI Resource Library for patients, carers and members of the public.
