HSC R&D Division make a research and development funding commitment in the form of an annual contribution to National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). This significant investment enables Northern Ireland-based researchers to lead on applications for NIHR research opportunities alongside colleagues from the United Kingdom (UK).
The NIHR funding programmes available to researchers in NI are:
- Health Technology Assessment (HTA)
- Health and Social Care Delivery Research (HSDR)
- Public Health Research (PHR)
- Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME)
- Public Health Interventions Responsive Studies Teams (PHIRST)
- Evidence Synthesis
- Invention for Innovation (i4i)
- Research Programme for Social Care (RPSC)
- Programme Grants for Applied Research programme (PGfAR)
- Programme Development Grants
The NIHR Career funding programmes available to NI researchers are:
- Senior Investigators
- EME Post-doctoral awards
- HTA Post-doctoral awards
- NIHR Associate Principal Investigator Scheme

Please note that the Research Support Service (RSS) is only available to applicants to England. However, researchers from Northern Ireland can access this service if a co-applicant is based in an English Institution.
HSC R&D Division can provide advice for applicants in the area of research costs (see Research Costs). For research activity in Northern Ireland, funding of NHS or HSC Support Costs (Service Support Costs) is the responsibility of HSC R&D Division, subject to satisfactory review and available budget. You should apply for funding of Service Support Costs as early as possible in your application process.
HSC R&D Division also provide guidance and support on public involvement.
