“Alcohol Related Brain Injury/Damage: Prevalence, Effects, and Treatment”
Diane Watson , BSc OT, Outreach Clinical Lead, Leonard Cheshire ARBD service, Northern Ireland.
Diane has over 25 years’ experience working as a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist, and practice educator for Adults with Acquired Brain Injury. For the past four years she has specialised in the rehabilitation of Alcohol Related Brain Damage (ARBD). In her current role she has developed an Outreach Service for those who have moved from residential rehabilitation to the community. She has also completed a published evaluation in this area along with Queens University, Belfast. She is a member of Northern Ire-land Drug and Alcohol Alliance (NIADA), which facilitates co-operation among voluntary and community sector organisations supporting those affected by alcohol and drug use, and their families. She is a SMART recovery facilitator and has presented at the All-Ireland ARBD conference, and the UK ARBD network. She is currently working with the UK ARBD network on developing a consensus document for the management of ARBD.
In Northern Ireland, Leonard Cheshire provides a range of supported living and community based services. They work in partnership with a range of agencies to deliver services and inform policy, campaigning on issues relevant to disabled people living in Northern Ireland. Their Alcohol Related Brain Injury Unit (ARBI) opened in January 2020. It is a specialised rehabilitation unit for individuals with a diagnosis of ARBI. In this seminar, Diane will discuss the symptoms, prevalence, and effects of ARBI, as well as describing their treatment service.
