The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is establishing a hub in Northern Ireland, hosted by the Economic Development Agency for Northern Ireland (NI), Invest NI. This builds on the MHRA’s established partnerships with healthcare, academia and industry and ensures its work is even more strongly linked to the whole of the UK.
Northern Ireland is home to around 250 businesses in the life sciences sector, supporting 18,000 jobs and contributing £1.1 billion to the local economy.
The MHRA is strengthening its collaboration with NI as part of its role as the UK-wide regulator of medicines, medical devices and blood components for transfusion,
Establishing a more regular MHRA presence in NI, this represents an important step in ensuring that regulatory expertise is consistently delivered across all parts of the UK and reflects a shared commitment between the MHRA and partners in Northern Ireland to support innovation, enhance patient safety and improve health outcomes.
Through an enhanced programme of in-person engagement, the MHRA and Northern Ireland partners are deepening collaboration across the health system, life sciences sector, academic and patient communities.
Bernie Pearson, Head of Approvals, HSC R&D welcomes this news:
“I place real value on the strong partnership working with MHRA teams, as it underpins our ability to navigate the regulatory requirements applicable to Northern Ireland, providing assurance, alignment, and confidence across the UK wide system.”
