We’re pleased to publish our Training Needs Analysis for Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) in Health and Social Care research, now available to read here. A summary version of the report can also be read here.
The aim of the training needs analysis was to better understand how PPI is currently being used, what works well, and where researchers need more support to involve people meaningfully in their work. This work brings together insights from researchers across universities and health and social care settings, alongside perspectives from public contributors themselves. In total, we heard from 83 people across in Northern Ireland from Health and Social Care settings and Universities in Northern Ireland. The results were encouraging.
Researchers overwhelmingly recognise that involving patients, carers and the public leads to more relevant, impactful research. At the same time, many told us they would value more practical guidance, particularly on how to find and work with contributors, plan involvement effectively, and demonstrating the impact of PPI.
Rather than asking why PPI matters, researchers are now asking how to do it well in real-world settings. There is strong demand for hands-on, skills-based training, opportunities to learn from real examples, and ongoing support for PPI beyond one-off sessions.
In response, HSC R&D Division will continue to offer support and training for PPI, however, using the results of the report we will be updating and developing our training to better reflect the needs of what people need help with the most in PPI.
This report marks an important step in ensuring that PPI continues to grow as a meaningful and embedded part of Health and Social Care research in Northern Ireland, helping to ensure that research is shaped by, and for, the people it aims to benefit.
