12-14 May 2020 - NI Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) Datathon

Event Date:
2020-05-12

What: Northern Ireland Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) Datathon

Where: UU Magee Campus

When: 12-14 May 2020

Ulster University will be hosting the very first Northern Ireland Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) datathon from 12-14 May 2020 at the Magee Campus. This prestigious, three-day workshop will allow researchers from many different data backgrounds to work with the DPUK's cohort data. The event is jointly organised by the Alan Turing Institute, Alzheimer’s Research UK, DEMON Network, Ulster University and Dementias Platform UK. The previous datathons took place in the Alan Turing Institute, University of Exeter, University of Cambridge, Swansea University, and University of East Anglia.

Dementias Platform UK (DPUK), directed by Professor John Gallacher, University of Oxford, is a £53m public-private partnership funded by the Medical Research Council to accelerate research and new treatments for dementia. DPUK is bringing together records from over 45 different cohort studies (3 million+ participants) to create the world’s richest source of data for use in research and drug development for dementia.

The challenge of understanding the invisible early stages of dementia is one of the biggest barriers to progress in treatment development today – and is the one where the data experts come in. At the DPUK datathon, the data scientists and dementia researchers will combine domain knowledge with a variety of traditional statistical methods and machine learning techniques, to analyse DPUK’s real-world data and explore disease patterns that could pave the way to accelerating treatment. The analysts will work in multi-disciplinary groups to facilitate learning and fresh approaches to understanding dementia progression.

Following the datathon, teams will receive ongoing support via DPUK Reach to develop their ideas into full study proposals and published research. For early-career researchers, it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and build a network of multi-disciplinary contacts.
