Health and Social Care Research & Development (HSC R&D) welcomed Lord O’Shaughnessy to Northern Ireland (NI) to meet with colleagues in the HSC research community who showcased the NI research ecosystem and discussed how NI will deliver on the recommendations from the O’Shaughnessy Review.
Lord O’Shaughnessy’s review of commercial clinical trials was commissioned by the UK Government in February 2023, following on from the COVID-19 pandemic. Published in May 2023, the review identified key challenges in conducting commercial clinical trials in the UK and offered recommendations on how to address them. The full government response, published in November 2023, set out a clear and renewed ambition to increase the scale, speed, and efficiency of clinical trial delivery in the UK.
Representatives at the recent roundtable included HSC infrastructure, Department of Health, critical care, cardiovascular, vision and respiratory research leaders, Health Innovation Research Alliance Northern Ireland and Invest NI.
