“Understanding how behaviour change interventions work: process evaluation”

Prof Wendy Hardeman, Professor of Behavioural Science University of East Anglia, Norwich

In Northern Ireland, the leading behavioural causes of years of life lost are tobacco use, unhealthy diets, alcohol and drug use, and physical inactivity. A key question is whether interventions to support behaviour change are effective. However, to inform service delivery, clinical practice and policy we also need to know how interventions work and how they could be replicated in other settings. This is called process evaluation. Wendy will present the Medical Research Council guidance for process evaluation, and case studies illustrating how process evaluation helps us understand how interventions are delivered and engaged with, and how they work.

Wendy is Professor of Behavioural Science in the School of Health Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich. Her research focuses on how we can best support people in adopting and maintaining healthy behaviours, such as being more physically active and eating a healthy diet. Wendy leads the “Behaviour Inequalities and Health” research theme in the Norwich Institute of Healthy Ageing and co-leads the Behavioural and Implementation Science Group. Her research programme spans individual-level and group-based interventions delivered in primary care and community settings, as well as digital interventions. Wendy is President of the European Health Psychology Society.
