The third international seminar on Public Health Research in Palliative Care is being organised in partnership with All-Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC) and EAPC Reference Group on Public Health and Palliative Care. The theme of the seminar – ‘A Human Rights based approach to Palliative Care: Towards Solutions for Public Health Palliative Care’ is highly relevant as 2023 marks 75 years since the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed by the United Nationals General Assembly in Paris on the 10 December 1948. This was recognized as a milestone document in the history of human rights, and paved the way for many human rights treaties applied globally.
This does, however, raise a number of questions for palliative care: To what extent has Palliative Care enabled a human rights based approach? What is the contribution of a public health approach to palliative care? What lessons can be learnt and subsequent future considerations for research?
The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most significant public health crises many of us will experience. This November seminar will present a key opportunity for researchers to come together to discuss public health palliative care research and debate some of these questions considering the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
