NIHR Value Framework: Seeking your feedback on the third draft set of Shared Outcomes

The NIHR Value Framework is a cross-organisational outcomes framework that describes the value that current NIHR activities collectively aim to create. This third draft set of Shared Outcome statements describes four main areas of change that NIHR is seeking to achieve to fulfil its mission of improving the health and the wealth of the nation through research: by maximising the use of research outputs, optimising how research is done, supporting cultural shifts in how research is undertaken, and ensuring the sustainability of the research system. For these changes to be successfully achieved NIHR and its funded researchers work in partnership with the public and stakeholders from across the health, public health and social care research communities, including the NHS, local authorities, universities, other research funders, charities, and the public and commercial sectors.

NIHR supports health, public health and social care research to meet the needs of the public and the health and social care systems - when we use the word ‘research’ in this NIHR Value Framework we mean health, public health and social care research specifically. Where we use the phrase ‘health and social care’ throughout the framework it is inclusive of public health.

The third draft set of NIHR Value Framework Shared Outcomes consists of four Key Shared Outcomes that describe what NIHR is aiming to achieve in the next 15-25 years. Each of these four Key Shared Outcomes has a cluster of between 4-6 Intermediate Shared Outcomes that describe what NIHR is aiming to achieve in the next 5-15 years. In this context ‘Shared Outcome’ means the benefits and changes that NIHR intends to achieve as a result of a combination of activities taking place across the organisation and in partnership with wider stakeholders.
