How can Vitamin D reduce the occurrence of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease?

It is understood that low levels of vitamin D can be associated with an increased incidence of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However there is uncertainty among healthcare professionals regarding the optimal level of vitamin D.

Dr Helen Wallace was funded by HSC R&D Division to look at the effect of giving vitamin D supplements to people who are at high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The research study included a clinical trial involving 66 patients. The findings from this study provide necessary information to healthcare professionals on the amount of vitamin D supplements that are appropriate for this high-risk patient group. It is hoped that if this guidance can be implemented it may reduce the occurrence of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The researchers are very grateful to all the participants who took part in this research.
